Dental implants are prosthetic teeth used to replace missing teeth. The implant itself is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to provide a sturdy platform to support a replacement tooth, bridge, or denture.
Permanent implants are an alternative to dentures and bridges. Unlike bridges and dentures, they do not need to be removed for cleaning or sleeping. On the other hand, implants are typically more expensive than other solutions but can last longer than other options.
Implants are usually recommended when a patient is missing one tooth, several teeth, or all of their teeth. But do note that implants require healthy gums and jawbones for support. Patients should also have a realistic expectation of how long the implant will last before needing to be replaced. If cared for properly, they can last decades.
Dental implant placement is a two-step process. The first involves surgically placing the implant into the jawbone and attaching a temporary restoration while the bone heals. The second step places a new permanent restoration after the bone has healed. Some patients may only need one procedure to restore a complete set of new teeth. Others may require more procedures depending on the number and location of missing teeth.
For example, if a patient has a missing front tooth, they will likely need two surgical procedures: the placements of an implant and a restoration. If the patient is missing several front teeth, they may need a bone graft before implant placement. A bone graft adds volume to the bone so the jaw can support the implant successfully.
Once the implant is in place, it can take up to six months for the jawbone to heal around it and create a solid foundation for a permanent restoration. Once the bone has healed, we will attach an abutment to the implant to serve as the base for a dental crown. The permanent crown is custom-crafted to match the surrounding teeth perfectly.
