Emergency Dentistry

An emergency dentist treats patients experiencing severe tooth pain, trauma to the mouth or teeth, and other unexpected issues that require immediate attention to restore optimal oral health once again. An emergency dentist may also provide treatment when a patient needs immediate care but cannot wait until their regularly scheduled checkup to begin treatment. Patients can schedule an appointment for emergency dental care by calling our dental office directly.

What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any mouth injury that requires immediate treatment to stop the bleeding, relieve pain, or save a tooth. We will determine if you have a true dental emergency during your appointment. However, if you have severe pain or swelling in your gums and need immediate relief, please call our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

We treat a few common dental emergencies in our offices regularly, including:

  • Toothache
  • Knocked-out Permanent Tooth
  • Broken Crown or Filling
  • Severe Gum Swelling

When Should You See a Dentist?

If you are experiencing any of the following, call your emergency dentist for an appointment as soon as possible:

  • You have a tooth knocked out because of an injury. The key to saving your tooth is seeing your dentist about an hour after the injury. The tooth should be placed back in the socket and stabilized by the dentist. A splint is often used to keep the tooth in place until you can visit the office in about a week or two for a more permanent solution.
  • You are experiencing severe pain in your teeth or gums. Often, this is a sign of an infection that needs to be treated by a professional immediately.
  • Your dental crown has fallen off. This can happen if you chew something hard or sticky. After the crown falls off, you can rinse your mouth with warm water and place a piece of sugar-free gum in the area where the tooth used to be. This will help protect the sensitive gum tissue and prevent bleeding. Then, you can call your dentist to make an appointment to have the crown replaced.
  • You have a toothache that interferes with your daily life. Pain can be a sign of tooth decay or infection, which needs to be treated quickly.
  • You suspect you have a broken jaw. This is rare, but it can happen if you have experienced trauma to the head or face area.
